“For generations, a hill of waste coal has loomed over Tire Hill and polluted the nearby Stonycreek River. Truckload by truckload, that is starting to change this spring.”

A project to remove more than 6 million tons of polluting coal mining waste from the early 1900s is underway in Conemaugh Township, Somerset County, by ARIPPA member Robindale Energy. The project will involve removing coal refuse over a span of eight to 10 years, using it to create alternative energy, and restoring the site to it’s natural state with a mix of high-alkaline beneficial ash and soil.
